The largest offshore wind farm in the world started to form off the east coast of Britain, is the flagship project showing one way to combat climate change on a large scale.
Located 120 kilometers (75 miles) off England's Yorkshire coast, the Hornsea One will produce enough energy to supply 1 million homes in the UK with clean electricity when it is completed in 2020.
The project extends to an area larger than Maldives or Malta and is further to the sea than any other wind farm. It consists of 174 wind turbines of 7 MW, with towers of approximately 100 m long. The codes cover a larger area than the eye-watching Wheel in London when it spins.
Only one rotation of one of the turbines to generate power the average home for an entire day, according to Stephanie Hoonings, senior project manager at Orsted's (DOGEF), the Danish energy company which built the farm.
The project will bring the United Kingdom closer to its goal of having one third of the country's electricity from the sea winds by 2030.
It's the kind of projects that can help governments achieve environmental goals set forth in this week's United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York. Some of the 77 countries that were committed at the summit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, but activists in the area of the region including Greta Thunberg say that the major emitters must do more to alleviate rising temperatures.
Renewable energy will be critical to achieving those climate targets.
In spite of the commitments made as part of the climate agreement in Paris in 2015, global emissions continued to rise in 2018, global energy demand grew at the fastest pace in a decade, according to the International Energy Agency. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said that coal use in energy generation accounted for one third of total CO2 emissions.
Trends show the need for additional clean energy solutions. In Britain, three further phases of the Hornsa project are planned.
The share of renewable energy sources in the global energy mix is small but growing. At the end of the day, a turning point can be reached. After 2035, renewable energy sources are expected to account for more than 50% of the generation, according to Mackenzie.
Wind energy is a big part of the solution, according to the International Energy Agency, the growth of electricity generation from wind increased by 12% in 2018, maintaining its position as the largest technology renewed which does not include water.

Changed its name from oil, Danish oil and natural gas in 2017 to reflect its transition to a green energy. The company has reduced its coal use by 73% since 2006 and intends to be coal-free by 2023.
The United Kingdom is its largest offshore wind market and will have invested £ 12 billion ($15 billion) in this sector by 2020.
With a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, the horny one will generate nearly twice the power of extensions free and intent-it is the largest offshore wind farm in the world, located in the Irish Sea.
(Horse 2) is under construction and has the ability to meet the electrical needs of up to 1.6 million homes a year, according to (free). Horncia 3 can provide electricity to more than 2 million homes.
There are now 37 offshore wind farms operating in the United Kingdom, as Orsted said. This makes Britain the largest marine wind market in the world.
